Journeys Project Coping with Grief Conference
Breaks through Stereotypes to Reach Understanding
Jan.
3, 2006, Brea, Calif. -- Grief touches everyone at some point
yet as a society we expect people to quickly move on with
their lives. Coping with Grief is a half-day conference
bringing together prominent counselors and healthcare professionals,
including the founder of one of the first U.S. hospices, to
promote a better understanding of bereavement issues, both
personally and as a society. It is open to the public and
will be held Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in Brea, Calif.
Organized by Journeys Project, a Vision4Media company and
the producers of a DVD on the
bereavement process, Coping with Grief will focus
on issues relating to common experiences, social misunderstandings
of grief and how to provide support for the bereaved. It is
directed toward counselors, hospice professionals, the healthcare
community, those who have suffered a loss and the friends
who are emotionally
supporting them.
The
conference is free but reservations are requested by emailing
Vision4Media at info@journeysproject.com. Speakers at the
event include:
* Keynote William M. Lamers, M.D., who in the 1970s established
one of the first hospice programs in the United States. He
has served as chair of the accreditation committee of the
National Hospice Organization and as president of the International
Work Group on Dying, Death and Bereavement.
* Shavonne Stricklen, a counselor with 25 years experience
in aging and bereavement, including bereavement training for
the AARP in Orange County, for the Catholic Diocese of Orange
and the North Orange County Community College District. She
has managed a widows of suicide program, provided
grief support at St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, Calif., and
taught hospice practices at Calif. State University at Fullerton
for 17 years.
* Mike Meador, director of bereavement services at Mariposa
Womens Center and the organizer of the Bereavement Leaders
of Orange County program where healthcare professionals come
together to share their experiences of managing grief with
their clients. He also coordinates the bereavement program
at Trinity Care Hospice in Cerritos, Calif., and as been specializing
in issues of trauma and loss for over 18 years.
Other speakers include Keith G. Myers, CEO of Vision4Media
and executive producer of Journey of Loss. . . Discovery of
Hope. He has spoken to organizations on the personal issues
relating to grief arising from his own experiences and in
making the film. David C. Bojorquez, Vision4Media creative
director and writer, director and executive producer of Journey
of Loss . . . Discovery of Hope will address how the media
can be used to communicate messages of value and stimulate
change.
Coping with Grief is being organized in cooperation
with St. Angela Merici Church and its associated Knights of
Columbus Council #9511. It will be held in the church hall
at 575 S Walnut Ave, Brea, Calif. 92821.
